Sosua

Sosua is a town located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic in the province of Puerto Plata.

Carretera de Puerto Plata in its passage through Sosua is made up of enclaves called Charamicos and is purely in the Dominican neighborhood of El Batey, where most hotels and shops are. Both are arranged on either side of the wide beach of Sosua.

Sosua is located 25km east of Puerto Plata, capital of the province of the same name, and 15km from the International Airport Gregorio Luperon.

Sosua Beach

El Batey was the first instance where the United Fruit Company established administrative offices, barracks, houses and a wharf in the early twentieth century, although the area had been inhabited for some time.  A nearby guard post was dependent on the Spanish garrison of Santiago de los Caballeros.

The foundation of Sosua was officially recognized with the arrival of 500 Jewish settlers who were welcomed by the government of Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in 1938. Jews entered with dairy and meat that is still an important economic engine in the city.

In addition, a synagogue has survived with an interesting museum about the Jewish community, which today has disbanded.
Just 20 years ago, Sosua was a quiet fishing village in which only a hotel operated. Today it has become one of the most important tourist resorts on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Culture

Economic and social characteristics have allowed the development of a cultural scene. Highlights include the works of dozens of artists selling their naif style Caribbean works to tourists.  This includes the painter Adolph Faringthon who has an abstract style of great warmth.  For the professional video service for weddings and social activities there is Felix Corona.

The work of the Spanish literary artist who settled in Sosua, Francisco Jose Ibanez Fabian, whose play “The Mulatto in Sosúua” describes realism and poetic prose through the life of the city and its diverse inhabitants.

Sosua, a town that is now an icon of prosperity, corporate work and great success, is a beautiful town that everyone wants to visit and never leave for its spectacular attractions that are bound to astound many, even those who are considered Sosueros.
