Samana

Samana is a city and administrative seat of the province of Samana in the east Samanaof the Dominican Republic. The city, whose complete name is actually Santa Barbara de Samana, has about 40,000 inhabitants.  The city was founded in 1756. In 1946 a fire destroyed the city which was completely built of wood.

The life of the city takes place on the Malecon, from the waterfront. There are public buildings and major hotels. From the harbour, boat tours are available to the nearby island of Cayo Levantado and whale watching tours are also offered.

Many day-trippers visit, especially during the mating season of the whales during the months of January and February at the town of Samana.   Between the city of Samana and Sabana de la Mar there is a passenger ferry in operation.
