Maimon

Maimon is a village located between the rivers Maimon, the Leonora, and the river Yuna. It is shaped like a small valley and surrounded by mountains, among which are: the hill of La Peguera; Loma Mala; La Lomita and Loma Siete Cabezas. The town is 10 km from the town of Piedra Blanca and about 24km from Bonao. The colonists who had settled in Bonao, needed to find an easy way to get to Concepcion de la Vega, where they seat the general authorities. The first Bonao was located in what is now the town of dreamers.

The journey north is difficult due to the swampy terrain. The road then diverts by Pierre White, making a path that is almost parallel with the Maimon River, reaching the town of Cotui and Angelina and falls back to the path that leads to the concept of the Vega. Maimon is a municipality to the west of Piedra Blanca on the 5km road that connects them. The province of Sanchez Ramirez is to the east by the River Zinc and north is the Yuna River.

The area of health has seen several studies carried out on air pollution and pollution products including the cast fireplaces of the Falconbridge facilities. Through these studies, they have determined that they severely and greatly affect a person’s health as well as the wildlife. There have also been studies of the water consumed.

It was determined in laboratories that due to a high degree of pollution, it was unfit for consumption. In 1985, Maimon had no hospital, patients had to go to Bonao, and many died en route as a result. Today they have a Sub-Health Center, where they receive assistance and placement. There are two private hospitals, four clinics and three laboratories for biochemical analysis.

The municipality of Maimon has many sources of employment, while recognizing that a small number of employees and workers at Falconbridge’s mining facilities and Rosario Dominicana now Barrick Gold Corporation, Cerro de Maimon, Dominican Sococo of Costa Rica are from other companies. Maimon and the Municipality has many young professionals in different areas in both educational and administrative sectors.

Because of the evictions that have occurred in Hatillo due to the construction of the Hatillo Dam and gold mining in the fields of cocoa, Pueblo Viejo (Province of Sanchez Ramirez) at the beginning of the 90s, saw a great migration, this has led to a severe shortage of available housing. You need job training center for people to rise socially.

Before the discovery of America, the natives were established near Maimon in “El Pino,” on the Maimon riverside and an Indian lived there named Maimon, hence the name of the people. Proof of that are the faces of Indians carved in the stones along the river and in caves. Their were disappearances of indigenous Spanish families including Sanchez Rodriguez and Pineapple. Then following the French occupation by the treaty of Basel, it was said that the French fought against Juan Sanchez Ramirez, winning the battle of Palo Hincado against Ferrand in 1808.

Juan Sanchez Ramirez was a great cattleman, according to the story in Maimon, and because he was from Cotui Maimon, they named a Province ‘Juan Sanchez Ramirez’.
Over time the town grew, establishing different families and different places such as Cortorreal, Vidal, Reyes, etc.
