Located in the heart of the Cordillera Central, Jarabacoa stands on a plateau at 525 meters. Bordered on the north by La Vega, with Monsignor Nouel to the southeast and Janice Constance to the northwest. It has an impressive nature. The Rio Yaque del Norte (300 km), three stunning waterfalls: the Jimenoa Falls; Jimenoa Falls and Falls Baiguate are close to Pico Duarte (the largest of the West Indies at 3175m).

Major roads leading to La Vega are: Constanza; Manabao; Jumunuco; Tavera and Janice. It is about 2 ½ hours from Santo Domingo at average speed, a distance of 130km on the Duarte highway, and 21km on the road Federico Basilis.

On September 27th1858 Jarabacoa bagins life as a township, a category obtained after a career that began in the early nineteenth Jarabacoacentury. This year it is celebrating its 150th Anniversary of City Living with a series of events that call to mind its history. Jarabacoa was a territory inhabited by the Taino Nation.

When the Spanish arrived on the island, some settled in this place in search of gold and silver, but then left the area. Then came a process of establishing, as a result of the massive population. La Vega was burned down by Dessalines in 1805, many residents took refuge in the mountains of Jarabacoa where they later made their home.

During the Haitian occupation (1822-1844) they continued migration to Jarabacoa, which increased during the wars for independence. Many southerners settled here. Jarabacoa was erected in 1854 as a military virtue of its strategic position in the communication between the Cibao and the south.

It had a population of 2,000 inhabitants and many of their soldiers stood out brightly in the deeds for independence. This is the case with General Jose Duran and General Norberto Tiburcio. Four years later, Jarabacoa was elevated by the decree of President Pedro Santana on the 27th September 1858. By Royal Order of the Spanish Ministry of War dated June 26th 1862, they established the Military Command of Jarabacoa.

Much of the economy is agriculture in Jarabacoa. There are plans to plant strawberries sold in the country and then export them. The lands of the town are high and productivity has a varied production of vegetables on a large scale including lettuce, tomatoes, eggplants, carrots, beets, tallota, watercress and cabbage that are used for domestic consumption and for export.

Jarabacoa has had in recent years, large tourism developments. This region offers attractive eco-tourism and adventure. There are also tree nurseries, ornamental and fruit, processed coffee production in high-tech factories with scientists (Ramirez) and a pants factory. We can also mention the livestock (cattle and swine) and poultry, as part of its economy.

There are 2 gas packaging plants in the municipality and the unemployment rate is very high despite the facilities of a poultry farm and gardens. It is good to note that the social security of workers does not meet its mission. The housing shortage is due to the large population increase, tourism, migration of the peasant and the lack of resources demanded by the population.
