El Cachon

El Cachon is a borough of the city of Barahona, in the south of the Dominican Republic.   Founded at the end of the seventeenth century by a peasant of Sanjuanero origins named Papito Perez who lived in one of the communities across the Rio Yaque del sur called “Fish.”
Papito Perez did not have a supply of potable water for consumption so was Dominican Republic 12moved to a small creek which is still in force named PAPITO to honor him.   Because of the frequent flooding of the Yaque River in the south, they were forced to move to what is now The Cachon, specifically one of the highest places in the community. Then other people moved with him and founded the neighboring communities of Cabral, a neighboring town.

There are two different theories of the origin of the name of this community.  The first says qe Cachon gets its name because of the many heads of seawater that existed or exist here.   And the second is that the community had plenty of cattle (beef), so people from nearby places are referred to as “the Cachon” when talking about this community.

Today it is a borough of people who are very kind and friendly.  Its economy is based on agriculture, fisheries, development of sweet sausage, as well as recruitment of militia.  There are certain military native ranks which are very high in this community.
