Yaque del Norte River

This basin rises in the Cordillera Central at an altitude of 2,580 meters in the Los Haitises Dominican republic 1Loma Rucilla and drains into the Bay of Montecristi, in the Atlantic Ocean, near San Fernando de Montecristi, at the northwest corner of the country.

The river Yaque del Norte is the largest watershed in the Dominican Republic.  It has an area of about 7053km2 in length and its average flow is in the range 80 m/s with a distance of 296km.  Bathing a large percentage of almost all the territory of the Western Cibao Cibao Central, among which include the towns of Jarabacoa, Santiago de los Caballeros and Mao.
Its waters are used for feeding the irrigation canals that contribute to the development of agriculture from the northeast, and on it were built major dams and aqueducts that are used for hydroelectric power, thanks to the construction of the dam de Tavera.  In recent years, in the vicinity of Jarabacoa they have developed the practice of rafting due to the turbulence of this river in its descent toward the sea.
